This volume was conceived under the ominous cloud of a global pandemic. In April 2020 we had planned to gather a select group of scholars working on various aspects of Nordic eighteenth-century religion in Farfa outside Rome, Italy, to create a joint inventory of perspectives and resources. As organizers, we were not at first greatly concerned by the news of a virus gradually spreading from China. When we became aware of the tragic and sudden spread of the disease in northern Italy, we began to realize that our anticipated meeting of minds was in serious jeopardy. In the end, of course, we were forced to cancel the entire event.

After a digital conversation among the intended participants of the meeting, we decided to make a joint effort to produce an edited volume which would explore the theme of ‘Enlightenment and Lutheran confessional culture’ in the Nordic countries. The comparatively mild COVID-19 restrictions in Sweden allowed some of us to gather in Ystad in the far south of the country in early October 2020, a meeting generously sponsored by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation). Other contributors were present digitally. This get-together was subsequently followed by additional digital seminars organized among the group of contributors.

As editors, we would like to express our gratitude to all those who have contributed chapters to this book. Without their continued enthusiasm for this project, our work would have been much more difficult. Working together with a group of colleagues who have always prioritized responding to our various suggestions, emails and comments made the entire process of producing a complete typescript into an enjoyable experience. In addition, we have greatly benefited from the insightful comments offered by Professor Pasi Ihalainen at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. We would also like to thank the two anonymous peer reviewers commissioned by Lund University Press for their generous and constructive comments on the typescript.

We are deeply indebted to the editorial committee of Lund University Press for their willingness to include this volume in their prestigious line of publishing. Throughout the entire process, the Lund University Press director, Professor Marianne Thormählen, has been more than generous with her time, offering both advice and perceptive remarks. The care and professionalism of the people at Manchester University Press, especially Alun Richards, have turned the last legs of this journey into an enjoyable experience. The editors and publisher are also extremely grateful to Joe Haining of Blenheim Editorial for superb copy-editing conducted with great patience and unflappable cheerfulness.
