Italy. Additionally, this field has been gradually examining Mediterranean-focused themes instead of exclusively treating matters
concerning the Maghreb–France dyad. This paradigm shift can be seen
in the recent literary and cinematic productions I will be discussing here. I
will look at how literature and film have addressed the issues at the core of
clandestine migration, a topic Mediterranean writers and filmmakers born
and living in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France, and Italy have tackled
increasingly since the late 1990s.4 Here, I will focus on Tahar Ben Jelloun
taking place in such an otherwise picturesque context.
Kurys’ first three films invite the spectator to read
their family narratives against the background of the general upheavals in
French society of the period. La Baule Les Pins is set at the time of
the Cold War, in the year in which de Gaulle was re-elected to power in order to
restore order in Algeria, an election which brought the Fourth Republic to
an end. However
celebrate the centenary of the colonisation of Algeria, is overt. It can be
seen in part as a mobilisation of colonial narratives to respond to the
anxieties expressed in the earlier film (although that clearly was not an explicit intention). Its message is encapsulated by the
opening text that responds to metropolitan ignorance and exotic stereotypes
by celebrating the prodigious economic activity, mechanised agriculture and
developed industry of the
conscience was also present in the films that are largely about
relationships. The films I discuss in this chapter are characterised by an
interest in political and social issues that would become more marked in
Godard’s cinema of the late 1960s: the Algerian war and prostitution.
But, beyond their subject matter, perhaps the most significant factor
linking these two films is a certain darkness of tone, a
anthropological research, 13 examples from studies in art and architectural
research are not abundant and include reference to French North Africa
almost exclusively. 14

This book relates to the mimetic and transformative powers of literature and film. It examines literary works and films that help deflate stereotypes regarding France's post-immigration population, promote a new respect for cultural and ethnic minorities. The writers and filmmakers examined in the book have found new ways to conceptualize the French heritage of immigration from North Africa and to portray the current state of multiculturalism in France. The book opens with Steve Puig's helpful recapitulation of the development of beur, banlieue, and urban literatures, closely related and partly overlapping taxonomies describing the cultural production of second-generation, postcolonial immigrants to France. Discussing the works of three writers, the book discusses the birth of a new Maghrebi-French women's literature. Next comes an examination of how the fictional portrayal of women in Guene's novels differs from the representation of female characters in traditional beur literature. This is a full-length monograph about one of France's most important contemporary filmmakers, perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his award-winning Les Roseaux sauvages/Wild Reeds of 1994. It locates André Téchiné within historical and cultural contexts that include the Algerian War, May 1968 and contemporary globalisation, and the influence of Roland Barthes, Bertolt Brecht, Ingmar Bergman, William Faulkner and the cinematic French New Wave. The originality of his sixteen feature films lies in his subtle exploration of sexuality and national identity as he challenges expectations in his depictions of gay relations, the North African dimensions of contemporary French culture and the centre–periphery relationship between Paris, especially his native southwest and the rest of France. In a world defined by the flow of people, goods and cultures, many contemporary French films explore the multicultural nature of today's France through language. In a cinematic landscape increasingly characterised by multiculturalism and linguistic diversity, a number of contemporary French films are beginning to represent multilingualism as a means of attaining and exerting social power. This book is the first substantial study of multilingual film in France. Unpacking the power dynamics at play in the dialogue of eight emblematic films, it argues that many contemporary French films take a new approach to language and power. The book begins in central Paris in Polisse and Entre les murs, then travels to the banlieue in Un prophete and Dheepan. It then heads to another culturally loaded but very different space with Welcome and La Graine et le mulet, whose border-crossing stories unfold in the port cities of Calais and Sete respectively. Then, in London River and Des hommes et des dieux, the book steps off French soil, travelling to the English capital and former French colony of Algeria. It explores characters whose lives are marked not only by France, but by former colonies, foreign countries and other European states. In its depiction of strategic code-switching in transcultural scenarios, contemporary French multilingual cinema shows the potential for symbolic power inherent in French, other dominant Western tongues, and many migrant and minority languages. The book offers a unique insight into the place of language and power in French cinema today.
For imperialists, the concept of guardian is specifically to the armed forces that kept watch on the frontiers and in the heartlands of imperial territories. Large parts of Asia and Africa, and the islands of the Pacific and the Caribbean were imperial possessions. This book discusses how military requirements and North Indian military culture, shaped the cantonments and considers the problems posed by venereal diseases and alcohol, and the sanitary strategies pursued to combat them. The trans-border Pathan tribes remained an insistent problem in Indian defence between 1849 and 1947. The book examines the process by which the Dutch elite recruited military allies, and the contribution of Indonesian soldiers to the actual fighting. The idea of naval guardianship as expressed in the campaign against the South Pacific labour trade is examined. The book reveals the extent of military influence of the Schutztruppen on the political developments in the German protectorates in German South-West Africa and German East Africa. The U.S. Army, charged with defending the Pacific possessions of the Philippines and Hawaii, encountered a predicament similar to that of the mythological Cerberus. The regimentation of military families linked access to women with reliable service, and enabled the King's African Rifles to inspire a high level of discipline in its African soldiers, askaris. The book explains the political and military pressures which drove successive French governments to widen the scope of French military operations in Algeria between 1954 and 1958. It also explores gender issues and African colonial armies.
