Around midnight, led by the Sixth Court’s Tua Ya Pek, the four Hell deities left the temple with their flags draped over their shoulders and walked in single file along the narrow corridor separating the temple from the wasteland beyond, and eagerly approached the coffins to inspect them. The larger coffin was then rolled into the centre of the ritual space which was bathed in darkness, and a stone censer was placed at its foot opposite the wandering spirits’ altar.
