Despite this, however, scholars of East Asian science and medicine have not had the chance to come together and direct similarly inspired
partnership. It addresses these two corollary problems: What are the external and domestic factors that account for the increasing security cooperation between the Philippines and Japan? And what is the state of this security partnership? It also looks into these related issues: What is the origin of the Philippine–Japan security partnership? How has China’s maritime expansion in East Asia affected the security policies of these two countries? What are the components of the Philippine–Japan security cooperation? And finally, how will this security partnership evolve over
Organisation and the various Asian and East Asian frameworks for cooperation, generate mutual interests between China, the US and Asian states which make armed conflict between them unlikely and counter-balance pressures for strategic competition (Ikenberry 2008). If China becomes a liberal democracy, it may even become part of the zone of democratic peace – within which wars have become inconceivable – with the major Western powers. Liberalism’s focus on domestic politics, however, also directs attention to an alternative scenario: if China descends into extreme
partnership, as in John's case, or with the help of intermediaries or as part of a self-organised journey, moving abroad is evidently a key node in their career trajectory and, as outlined in Chapter 5 , marks the moment when a young person's dream of ‘becoming a somebody’ seemingly materialises. However, arriving in Europe, South-East Asia or elsewhere is far from the end point of a player's journey. Rather, reaching what is often perceived in young players’ imaginations as the football Eldorado is seldom the ticket to a smooth and successful future career trajectory

Tokugawa officials had been dealing with violence on the sea lanes criss-crossing East Asia for years, but there was something different about this episode. The ship from Ryukyu had not been attacked by a European overseas enterprise like the Dutch East India Company operating with a flexible dispensation for privateering. Instead, it had been seized by vessels attached to the Zheng state on Taiwan.3 By 1672, when news of the vessel’s capture reached Nagasaki, Zheng Chenggong, who had evicted the

There are many ways to lose a war. One of the more embarrassing ones is to run out of rubber. That prospect was haunting Americans in 1942 when the country was gearing up its war economy. In the months after Pearl Harbor, Japan had occupied the rubber plantations of South-east Asia, forcing the US to find other suppliers. The search turned into a frenzy. In March
