; elsewhere, the choice is less clear. Australia and New Zealand use a combination of UK English and American English spellings, for example. Outside of the UK, unless your department or school, or, indeed, your tutors, specify which you are to use for your essays, it may not matter which you choose. Be very sure, of course, to be consistent.
We cannot list all words that are difficult to spell, but here are some of the common spelling mistakes which we come across in our students’ work, and which, as we shall recommend when it comes to thinking about vocabulary
reason, at times the discussion in this chapter may appear to focus on exploring the links between natural sciences and the arts. This doesn’t mean that the same approaches and issues aren’t faced by researchers from the social sciences or humanities but, rather, that these disciplines have not received the same attention from funders (e.g. Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom; XEROX PARC PAIR in the United States; or Synapse in Australia) or, indeed, the research community.
In this chapter we explore the relationship between research (science, social science

. However, when designing your evaluation it can be easy to step into ‘advocacy’ mode, whereby you seek to strongly justify your activity, approach or even discipline.
Drawing on the second point, it is now commonplace to see research communication and engagement activities feature as one type of impact within a wider analysis of research impact. Research impact is subject to discussion in many individual countries, including Australia (Australian Research Council, 2014 ), Ireland (Science Foundation Ireland, 2012 ), the Netherlands, the United States (Grant et

Rats arriving on the damaged and beached supply ship SS Makambo in 1918 were thought to have wiped out the Lord Howe stick insect in the 1920s, though climbing expeditions to a nearby rock, Ball’s Pyramid, since the 1960s found a few dead specimens. ‘We regularly received requests to climb Ball’s Pyramid to look for the insect, but the climbing teams rarely if ever

A move to deliberative engagement and participation has occurred in many geographical areas of the world including the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and Brazil, and whilst it might be typified by its use in existing democratic countries, the United Nations is recommending the enhancement of associated deliberation mechanisms particularly in the western Asian region (this includes countries like Libya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Egypt), where it is seen to be

Whilst a number of the studies undertaken by individual countries do not allow for direct comparison of rates of participation, primarily due to their methodological variations, there are some general trends which are worthy of note. Schuster ( 2007 ) highlights these trends across participation studies from thirty-five different countries including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Japan and Brazil. Firstly, whilst activities like going to the cinema, reading and
