Technological progress has been matched by social change. People are less willing to accept without question the decisions of those who exercise power, be they judges, politicians or doctors. Paternalism is out of fashion. Lawyers and philosophers, not to mention parents, wonder why the doctor is best qualified to judge whether a baby’s quality of life is such as to make life-saving surgery
